Cunning Runner
On the last morning of our polar bear expedition, I was fortunate enough to encounter this arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) carrying the scapula of a caribou. Arctic foxes prey on small animals such as lemmings, insects, and small invertebrates. But they also like to steal and scavenge from the already-hunted. Without a doubt, this fox had just stolen this prized meal from a nearby wolf pack. It will likely go on to enjoy the meal itself or head to its den to feed its hungry kits.
This photo was taken in Wapusk National Park, Manitoba, Canada. No bait or trick of any kind was used.
